The common noctule
nyctalus noctula
The common noctule, one of the largest bats in our region, lives mainly in forests. It sleeps in tree holes during the day and hunts for insects at night, and even during the day in late autumn. It can fly at speeds of up to 60 km/h.
A typical woodland bat, the common noctule usually lives in abandoned woodpecker holes.
Often up to a thousand animals hibernate together in old, abandoned buildings or under bridges.
