The tawny owl
strix aluco
This medium-sized owl hunts at night and sleeps during the day, hidden in the treetops, usually in forests or groves that alternate with open areas.
The tawny owl builds its nest in hollow tree trunks, but also in rock cavities or in suitable places in buildings.
The tawny owl feeds mainly on mice, but occasionally catches squirrels or rabbits.
From September to November and at the beginning of spring, the typical call of the male tawny owl can often be heard.
